Cool. I'm up for it. I've got homework I should be doing instead. So no LJ between 10am Friday and 10am Saturday. Friday: Homework. Saturday: Andy Warhol exhibit.

Tulsa, OK, would be the same as the Chicago time...right?
Mar. 19th, 2008 01:52 pm (UTC)
Chicago is Central Time. I think Tulsa is Central too.

If you are Mountain Time, go with Denver.

I'm sorry, but you all should hear yourselves.

If you go right back to LJ and go back to posting commenting per normal the day after this strike...YOU WON'T HAVE DONE ANYTHING.

The ONLY way to send a real message of the kind you're trying to send is to WALK AWAY from LiveJournal and NOT come back!

I just...I can't believe that everyone here things this is a grand idea. None of you have even thought about it. A ONE DAY strike? Please. The very fact that you plan to come right back proves that it's going to be meaningless. Especially since, if LJ knows about this strike--and you know they do--they've already got forewarning that it's only going to be for one day. Do you really think they're going to care if they already know before the strike even begins that it's only for 24 hours and then it's back to the usual?

Even if they did notice a significant drop in their statistics, your threat is worthless because you haven't abandoned LJ, you've just gone away for the day. Besides that, you've got people talking about how convenient this strike is because of the time. That alone should tell you something: LiveJournal is accustomed to periodic slumps in its statistics due to certain days!

It just appalls me how everyone here is all excited about having a chance to Do Something and Show Those People...when none of you are actually planning to stop using LiveJournal, just take a break for a few hours.

If you want to send a message, you have to back it up with something real. This 24 hour vacation from LJ isn't real. It isn't threatening. A significant portion of their userbase leaving permanently? THAT is something that would get LJ's attention. Not this ridiculous, failed-before-its-begun plan.

Mar. 19th, 2008 05:48 am (UTC)
thx for this.
will repost on mine.

i'm still not understanding this fully. if say someone has a basic account, does that mean LJ plans on deleting it?

i guess from what i read on somebody else's post, they said that if you had created your basic acct before a certain date, you wouldn't be spammed with ads but that after that date, any free users would be blasted with ads all over the place.

oh man, i hope that you can clarify.

thanks for the info!
Mar. 19th, 2008 10:10 pm (UTC)
No, not at all.

Existing basic accounts will not be affected, per LJ's current explanation. (Though I won't say that they've been good at keeping their promises). New basic accounts cannot be created, but currently existing basic accounts are safe.

I did not have an idea that basic accounts were being purged. That's derogatory to the whole meaning of 'community'. And racist decisions as well.

Count me in! LJ people should understand the importance of users and their rights.
Mar. 19th, 2008 07:14 pm (UTC)
Basic accounts are not being purged at this time. They have taken away the ability to make new Basic accounts, though. And the directors of SUP have stated in the Russian press that they are considering doing away with Basic accounts entirely.

This strike is about the poor customer service LJ has shown. It's about the lack of understanding about how users make new accounts. It's about the disdain shown for those users who list such "dangerous" topics as interests as "fanfiction" and "depression" and "bisexuality".

We don't want them to continue on this path. We don't want them to purge the Basic accounts. We want LJ to listen NOW, so we don't have to all leave later.

Thank you for joining in!

Giving up on LJ
I have given up on LiveJournal long ago. Too much trash and now with the paid account, it's just not worth it.

Right now I'm switching to www.yousaytoo.com - it's basically the same, but with flash games and a twitter clone.

But instead of ripping you off for money, they actually pay you to hangout there. Made like $10 yesterday for posting about crap and uploading games.

Thank you for joining!

I thought that Rome starts on Friday, March 21, at 1:00 AM -- due to different dates for Daylight Savings Time in different countries...

But either way, the two times are close enough, aren't they?

Please feel free to translate these posts into Italian and spread the word!

If London has Daylight Savings Time then midnight in London is not 00:00 GMT but 23:00 GMT.

GMT does not change with DST: http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/what-is-gmt.htm
Mar. 20th, 2008 01:02 am (UTC)
London doesn't go to Daylight Savings Time until the end of the month this year, AFAIK.
