I've posted this in my own LJ and I'll be busy with Purim and Shabbat anyway.

A friend made a rather valid observation however.

Once upon a time, LJ was invite-only and it wasn't until after they became a free access to all that the problems with trolls, spammers and bots because a real issue.

OK I'm in. I think it would be a good idea to list time zones; or at least add New York to your list. Some folks in my state probably don't realize NC is in the same time zone as Montreal.

In solidarity, my blog will be down from 8:00 p.m. Thursday to 8:00 p.m. Friday. Although I'll likely stay off the blog for both days just to make sure.

Kudos for organizing this.

Sounds pretty awesome, though you might want to actually use things like PST, Central, etc because some of us who live north of the American border often don't have a clue who matches up with us and have to use the link provided.

Of course, you can also chalk it up to laziness.

This isn't something I'm probably going to support - I personally don't care huge amounts about LJ... But I did want to say good for you for doing something about it, rather than just bitching about things. It's awesome to see people are actually DOING something about it. :)

I'm sorry, but you all should hear yourselves.

If you go right back to LJ and go back to posting commenting per normal the day after this strike...YOU WON'T HAVE DONE ANYTHING.

The ONLY way to send a real message of the kind you're trying to send is to WALK AWAY from LiveJournal and NOT come back!

I just...I can't believe that everyone here things this is a grand idea. None of you have even thought about it. A ONE DAY strike? Please. The very fact that you plan to come right back proves that it's going to be meaningless. Especially since, if LJ knows about this strike--and you know they do--they've already got forewarning that it's only going to be for one day. Do you really think they're going to care if they already know before the strike even begins that it's only for 24 hours and then it's back to the usual?

Even if they did notice a significant drop in their statistics, your threat is worthless because you haven't abandoned LJ, you've just gone away for the day. Besides that, you've got people talking about how convenient this strike is because of the time. That alone should tell you something: LiveJournal is accustomed to periodic slumps in its statistics due to certain days!

It just appalls me how everyone here is all excited about having a chance to Do Something and Show Those People...when none of you are actually planning to stop using LiveJournal, just take a break for a few hours.

If you want to send a message, you have to back it up with something real. This 24 hour vacation from LJ isn't real. It isn't threatening. A significant portion of their userbase leaving permanently? THAT is something that would get LJ's attention. Not this ridiculous, failed-before-its-begun plan.

thx for this.
will repost on mine.

i'm still not understanding this fully. if say someone has a basic account, does that mean LJ plans on deleting it?

i guess from what i read on somebody else's post, they said that if you had created your basic acct before a certain date, you wouldn't be spammed with ads but that after that date, any free users would be blasted with ads all over the place.

oh man, i hope that you can clarify.

thanks for the info!

I did not have an idea that basic accounts were being purged. That's derogatory to the whole meaning of 'community'. And racist decisions as well.

Count me in! LJ people should understand the importance of users and their rights.
