I'm in - but could they use the excuse that it is Good Friday and so lots of religious Christians would be abstaining anyway?
Mar. 17th, 2008 06:53 pm (UTC)
Just out of curiosity, why would Christians abstain from posting to LJ on Friday?

I've posted this in my own LJ and I'll be busy with Purim and Shabbat anyway.

A friend made a rather valid observation however.

Once upon a time, LJ was invite-only and it wasn't until after they became a free access to all that the problems with trolls, spammers and bots because a real issue.

I remember that time.

Mar. 17th, 2008 07:02 pm (UTC)
OK I'm in. I think it would be a good idea to list time zones; or at least add New York to your list. Some folks in my state probably don't realize NC is in the same time zone as Montreal.
Mar. 17th, 2008 07:14 pm (UTC)
Good point, I've added New York (and Denver too, for good measure). Thanks. :)

In solidarity, my blog will be down from 8:00 p.m. Thursday to 8:00 p.m. Friday. Although I'll likely stay off the blog for both days just to make sure.

Kudos for organizing this.
Mar. 17th, 2008 10:27 pm (UTC)
Thank you so much. I'm horrible at figuring out the time changes.
Mar. 17th, 2008 11:13 pm (UTC)
You're welcome. :)
Mar. 18th, 2008 10:34 am (UTC)
Do we not post or go on LJ at all, or are we supposed to post completely blank posts? *confused*
Mar. 18th, 2008 12:00 pm (UTC)
No posting at all since blank post would still show up in LJ's statistics as posts and it's those statistics we're trying to affect.

(Here's someone else who supports the idea and who's happily spreading the word. Thanks for coordinating this strike!)

I'm in, and i'm promoting this like crazy. ^.^
Mar. 18th, 2008 09:32 pm (UTC)
Sounds pretty awesome, though you might want to actually use things like PST, Central, etc because some of us who live north of the American border often don't have a clue who matches up with us and have to use the link provided.

Of course, you can also chalk it up to laziness.

Agreed. I'm moving in a couple days and this is happening on one of the last days that I will have internet access.

that's convenient, I'm usually only online at work and I get off Thursday at 5pm and won't likely be on again until Saturday.

Cool. I'm up for it. I've got homework I should be doing instead. So no LJ between 10am Friday and 10am Saturday. Friday: Homework. Saturday: Andy Warhol exhibit.

Tulsa, OK, would be the same as the Chicago time...right?
Mar. 19th, 2008 01:52 pm (UTC)
Chicago is Central Time. I think Tulsa is Central too.

If you are Mountain Time, go with Denver.

Mar. 19th, 2008 03:01 am (UTC)
I'm sorry, but you all should hear yourselves.

If you go right back to LJ and go back to posting commenting per normal the day after this strike...YOU WON'T HAVE DONE ANYTHING.

The ONLY way to send a real message of the kind you're trying to send is to WALK AWAY from LiveJournal and NOT come back!

I just...I can't believe that everyone here things this is a grand idea. None of you have even thought about it. A ONE DAY strike? Please. The very fact that you plan to come right back proves that it's going to be meaningless. Especially since, if LJ knows about this strike--and you know they do--they've already got forewarning that it's only going to be for one day. Do you really think they're going to care if they already know before the strike even begins that it's only for 24 hours and then it's back to the usual?

Even if they did notice a significant drop in their statistics, your threat is worthless because you haven't abandoned LJ, you've just gone away for the day. Besides that, you've got people talking about how convenient this strike is because of the time. That alone should tell you something: LiveJournal is accustomed to periodic slumps in its statistics due to certain days!

It just appalls me how everyone here is all excited about having a chance to Do Something and Show Those People...when none of you are actually planning to stop using LiveJournal, just take a break for a few hours.

If you want to send a message, you have to back it up with something real. This 24 hour vacation from LJ isn't real. It isn't threatening. A significant portion of their userbase leaving permanently? THAT is something that would get LJ's attention. Not this ridiculous, failed-before-its-begun plan.

Awesome! Me in Melbourne will be striking... and blowing some dust off my IJ account. :)

Mar. 19th, 2008 05:48 am (UTC)
thx for this.
will repost on mine.

i'm still not understanding this fully. if say someone has a basic account, does that mean LJ plans on deleting it?

i guess from what i read on somebody else's post, they said that if you had created your basic acct before a certain date, you wouldn't be spammed with ads but that after that date, any free users would be blasted with ads all over the place.

oh man, i hope that you can clarify.

thanks for the info!
Mar. 19th, 2008 10:10 pm (UTC)
No, not at all.

Existing basic accounts will not be affected, per LJ's current explanation. (Though I won't say that they've been good at keeping their promises). New basic accounts cannot be created, but currently existing basic accounts are safe.

I did not have an idea that basic accounts were being purged. That's derogatory to the whole meaning of 'community'. And racist decisions as well.

Count me in! LJ people should understand the importance of users and their rights.
Mar. 19th, 2008 07:14 pm (UTC)
Basic accounts are not being purged at this time. They have taken away the ability to make new Basic accounts, though. And the directors of SUP have stated in the Russian press that they are considering doing away with Basic accounts entirely.

This strike is about the poor customer service LJ has shown. It's about the lack of understanding about how users make new accounts. It's about the disdain shown for those users who list such "dangerous" topics as interests as "fanfiction" and "depression" and "bisexuality".

We don't want them to continue on this path. We don't want them to purge the Basic accounts. We want LJ to listen NOW, so we don't have to all leave later.

Thank you for joining in!

Im a permanent account holder and I think its shocking.. I love LiveJournal but what happened to the so called community? Free Speech? Bah, there are people behind these journals, they aren't just numbers and statistics.

I'm in.
